A: What’s that?

B: It’s a bed/car.

而There be通常表示“什么地方存在/有什么东西”，比如：

A: What’s in that box?

B: There is a turtle in it.

同样，使用What’s in your bedroom?（你房间里有什么？）的语句时，深层含义是：我不知道你房间里面“具体”有什么。 甚至里面有没有东西都不知道。

既然连“有什么”都不知道，当然无法用it来指代了。

不信请看使用复数名词来回答的情况：

A: What’s in your bedroom?

B: THEY are many books.

一看就知道THEY用在这里出问题了。

题外话：从您提供的问和答来看，What's in your room?应该是What’s in your BEDroom?的缩略。当然，bed作为卧室默认就有事物，是不必要回答的，所以：

A: What's in your (bed)room?

B: There is a bed.

是无厘头的问答。用术语来说，叫“语用不当”，或者缺乏语用意识。

但是回答There is a big bed.就又有了关键信息点（big），又是可以的。

再回到前面的一个情境：

A: What’s in that box?

B: （内心：I don’t know.）[Opens the box.] Wow! It’s a turtle! Whose turtle is it?

注：使用There is a turtle.肯定也是正确的。

有没有发现？It’s a turtle! 在表面上似乎已经回答了What’s in that box?但是事实上这里的it是形式主语。

最后，再回到您给的问答，但是凌哥将情境设计为：

A: [looking at something in B’s photo of his room, feeling puzzled] What’s in your room? （内心：I can’t figure it out.）

B: It's a bed. (But it looks like very big toy elephant.)

这个对话，读起来是不是又很自然了呀？ 在此处的What’s in your room?等价于What’s this/that in your room?

所以，您的学生们的：

A: What’s in your room?

B: It’s a bed.

应答是否正确，并不取决于字面上是否正确或者问答句式是否对应，而是取决于情境如何，以及学生是否“我言说我心”。如果不是，那么学生只是瞎猫碰上死耗子，误打误撞地正确了。
